How to screen sales executives

Sales candidates are, by definition, good at presenting themselves. That makes the first round harder, not easier: confident delivery can hide a thin pipeline, an inherited territory or targets that were never really theirs. For SMEs and distributors across the UAE and wider GCC, a structured first conversation helps separate repeatable selling habits from a polished pitch.

The bar

What good looks like

Strong sales executives can explain their numbers without prompting: average deal size, sales cycle, how much of their pipeline they generated themselves and what happened to their conversion when the market turned. They talk about customers in terms of problems solved, not products pushed.

In GCC markets, relationships and follow-through matter. Decision-makers expect several meetings, a reliable point of contact and honesty about lead times and pricing. The best candidates describe how they keep many relationships warm at once and how they handle the account after the order is signed.

Assess

Competencies to assess

Prospecting

Generates their own opportunities and can explain which channels work for which buyer.

Discovery

Asks questions that uncover budget, authority, need and timing before proposing anything.

Commercial accountability

Owns a number, knows their historical performance and is candid about misses.

Objection handling

Treats objections as information and responds with evidence, not pressure.

Account follow-through

Keeps promises after the sale and sees repeat business as part of the job.

Ask

Structured interview questions

  1. 01

Talk me through your last full year: your target, what you achieved and where the revenue came from.

A strong answer: Gives clear figures in their own words, separates new business from renewals or inherited accounts and explains the gap honestly.

  2. 02

Describe the best deal you closed that you sourced yourself, from first contact to signature.

A strong answer: Explains how they found the lead, who was involved on the buyer side, how long it took and what nearly derailed it.

  3. 03

A prospect says your price is higher than a competitor's. What do you do next?

A strong answer: Asks what is being compared, clarifies value and total cost, and knows where they have discretion and where they must escalate.

  4. 04

How do you decide which prospects deserve your time this week?

A strong answer: Uses explicit criteria such as fit, stage and likely close date rather than whoever replied most recently.

  5. 05

Tell me about a quarter where you missed target. What did you change?

A strong answer: Names a specific cause, a specific adjustment and the result, without blaming the market for everything.

  6. 06

A long-standing customer complains that a delivery was late and threatens to move suppliers. How do you handle it?

A strong answer: Listens first, gets the facts from operations, communicates a realistic recovery plan and follows up after it is resolved.

  7. 07

What do you record in the CRM after a meeting, and why?

A strong answer: Mentions next steps, stakeholders, objections and dates, and sees the CRM as a tool for the team rather than an admin chore.

Probe

Red flags to probe with a person

These are prompts for a follow-up conversation, not automatic reasons to reject. Context matters, and a reviewer should hear the candidate out.

  • Cannot state their own target or attainment without rounding to vague terms.
  • Credits all success to themselves and all misses to pricing, product or management.
  • No examples of self-sourced business in a role that requires prospecting.
  • Describes discounting as their main closing technique.
  • Dismisses CRM hygiene and reporting as unimportant.

With Voxxhire

Running the first round with Voxxhire

  1. 01

    Configure the role

Set the role criteria, competencies and job-specific interview prompts in an interview template, and agree the scoring guidance with the hiring manager.

  2. 02

    Invite candidates

Send the interview invitation by email from the hiring pipeline, or attach the template to a job so applicants are invited after they apply.

  3. 03

    Candidate completes a voice interview

After a notice and consent step and a quick microphone check, the candidate answers your questions in a spoken interview in English or Arabic, at a time that suits them.

  4. 04

    Recruiter reviews the evidence

Your reviewer reads the transcript and an evidence-backed scorecard that quotes the answer behind each competency score. Any AI recommendation is advisory and marked for human review.

  5. 05

    A person decides

Your recruiter or hiring manager decides who moves forward to the next stage. Voxxhire does not hire or reject anyone automatically.

Setting it up for sales executives

Before configuring the interview, write down which kind of seller you need: hunter or account manager, field or inside sales, B2B or consumer. Weight the competencies accordingly; prospecting deserves more weight for a new-territory role than for an existing book. Ask the sales manager to supply one realistic objection from your market and add it as a job-specific prompt. When reviewing, read the transcript around the numbers question closely and note any claims you will verify with references.

Boundaries

What Voxxhire does not do

Voxxhire runs and documents the structured interview stage. It does not verify visas, licences, certificates or right-to-work status, and it never hires or rejects a candidate automatically. For sales executives, your team still owns:

  • Verification of claimed targets and attainment with former managers.
  • Driving licence, if the role involves field visits.
  • Visa, residency and right-to-work status.
  • Any non-compete or notice-period terms in the candidate's current contract.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can a structured interview work for confident, experienced sellers?

Yes. A consistent set of questions makes it easier to compare a confident candidate with a quieter one on substance, such as numbers, process and customer examples, rather than delivery alone.

Should we include a role-play?

A live role-play with a manager is a good second step. The Voxxhire first round is a structured conversation; use it to decide who earns the manager's time.

Does the AI decide who is a strong seller?

No. It produces an advisory scorecard with transcript evidence for each competency. Your recruiter or sales manager reviews it and decides who moves forward.
