How to screen call centre agents

Contact centres in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC recruit in waves: a new campaign, a seasonal peak, a client launching Arabic support. Reading CVs tells you little about the thing that matters most, which is how a candidate sounds and thinks on a live call. Because the Voxxhire first round is itself a spoken interview, it suits this role well, provided you keep the decision with your team leaders.

The bar

What good looks like

A good agent listens before answering, confirms the problem in their own words and explains the next step simply. They stay polite with angry callers without becoming robotic, and they follow scripts and compliance wording where required while still sounding human.

Reliability is the other half of the job. Contact centres run on schedules, adherence and handle-time targets, so the strongest candidates understand shift work, can describe how they cope with repetitive calls and take quality feedback without becoming defensive.

Assess

Competencies to assess

Spoken clarity

Explains a process step by step in plain language a caller can follow.

Active listening

Summarises the caller's issue accurately before offering a solution.

Composure

Stays calm and respectful when a caller is frustrated or rude.

Process adherence

Follows scripts, verification steps and logging rules without cutting corners.

Resilience and reliability

Handles repetitive work, shift patterns and quality feedback professionally.

Ask

Structured interview questions

  1. 01

A caller says they have been charged twice and they are very angry. What are the first things you say?

A strong answer: Acknowledges the frustration, confirms identity through the required steps, restates the issue and explains what will happen next.

  2. 02

Explain to me, as if I were a customer, how to reset a password on a mobile app.

A strong answer: Gives short, ordered steps, checks understanding and avoids jargon; this question shows spoken clarity directly.

  3. 03

Tell me about a time you could not solve someone's problem on the spot. What did you do?

A strong answer: Describes escalating correctly, setting a realistic expectation and following up rather than promising something they could not deliver.

  4. 04

Your team leader says your call handling time is too long. How would you respond?

A strong answer: Asks for examples, looks for the cause (long holds, unclear notes) and suggests changes without sacrificing call quality.

  5. 05

How do you stay focused on your fortieth call of the day?

A strong answer: Gives practical habits such as short resets between calls, using notes and treating each caller as new.

  6. 06

A caller asks for information you are not allowed to share. How do you handle it?

A strong answer: Declines politely, explains what they can do instead and does not bend the rule to end the call faster.

Probe

Red flags to probe with a person

These are prompts for a follow-up conversation, not automatic reasons to reject. Context matters, and a reviewer should hear the candidate out.

  • Talks over the scenario or answers a different question from the one asked.
  • Describes blaming the customer or the company to calm a caller down.
  • Unwilling to work the shift pattern the campaign needs.
  • Treats verification steps as optional when the caller seems genuine.

With Voxxhire

Running the first round with Voxxhire

  1. 01

    Configure the role

Set the role criteria, competencies and job-specific interview prompts in an interview template, and agree the scoring guidance with the hiring manager.

  2. 02

    Invite candidates

Send the interview invitation by email from the hiring pipeline, or attach the template to a job so applicants are invited after they apply.

  3. 03

    Candidate completes a voice interview

After a notice and consent step and a quick microphone check, the candidate answers your questions in a spoken interview in English or Arabic, at a time that suits them.

  4. 04

    Recruiter reviews the evidence

Your reviewer reads the transcript and an evidence-backed scorecard that quotes the answer behind each competency score. Any AI recommendation is advisory and marked for human review.

  5. 05

    A person decides

Your recruiter or hiring manager decides who moves forward to the next stage. Voxxhire does not hire or reject anyone automatically.

Setting it up for call centre agents

Configure separate templates for inbound service, outbound sales and collections; the right answers differ. Add one scenario taken from the actual campaign, such as a delivery delay or a billing query, as a job-specific prompt. For Arabic or bilingual queues, invite candidates to the Arabic interview so the transcript reflects the language they will use on calls, and have an Arabic-speaking team leader review those scorecards. Agree in advance how much weight spoken clarity carries compared with process adherence.

Boundaries

What Voxxhire does not do

Voxxhire runs and documents the structured interview stage. It does not verify visas, licences, certificates or right-to-work status, and it never hires or rejects a candidate automatically. For call centre agents, your team still owns:

  • Typing speed or systems tests, if the role requires them.
  • Visa, residency and right-to-work status.
  • Background checks required by your client contract.
  • Shift availability confirmation in writing.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does Voxxhire score accents?

No. Scoring is against the competencies you configure, using the interview transcript as evidence. Agree with reviewers that the standard is clarity for the caller, not a particular accent.

Can we screen Arabic-speaking agents?

Yes. Interviews can run in English or Arabic. Use the language of the queue the candidate will work on, and have someone fluent in that language review the results.

Is this useful for large recruitment waves?

That is where a consistent first round helps most: every applicant answers the same questions and team leaders review evidence instead of running dozens of phone screens.
