How to screen software engineers
Tech teams in the GCC, from start-ups and fintechs to banks building in-house platforms, receive large numbers of applications for engineering roles, many from overseas. Senior engineers' time is the scarcest resource in the process. A structured first conversation can check communication, ownership and reasoning about past work before anyone is asked to review a take-home test.
The bar
What good looks like
Good engineers explain their own contribution clearly. They can describe a system they worked on, why it was designed that way, what went wrong in production and what they changed. They talk about trade-offs rather than claiming there was only one right answer.
They also collaborate. Strong candidates describe code review, writing tests, documenting decisions and working with product and design. They are honest about what they do not know and curious about how your team works.
Assess
Competencies to assess
Technical communication
Explains systems and decisions clearly to technical and non-technical listeners.
Ownership
Takes responsibility for features through to production and support.
Debugging approach
Investigates problems systematically using evidence.
Trade-off reasoning
Weighs speed, quality, cost and maintainability explicitly.
Collaboration
Gives and receives code review constructively and works well across functions.
Ask
Structured interview questions
- 01
Describe a system or feature you built that you are proud of. What was your part in it?
A strong answer: Separates their own work from the team's, explains the design and why it was chosen, and mentions measurable outcomes in their own words.
- 02
Tell me about a production incident you were involved in. How did you find the cause?
A strong answer: Describes a methodical investigation using logs or metrics, the fix, and what they did to prevent it happening again.
- 03
You must ship a feature by Friday but the code needs refactoring to do it properly. How do you decide what to do?
A strong answer: Discusses the risk, talks to the product owner, considers a smaller scope or follow-up work and documents the decision.
- 04
How do you approach reviewing a colleague's pull request?
A strong answer: Looks at correctness, tests and readability, gives specific and respectful comments, and distinguishes blocking issues from preferences.
- 05
Explain a technical concept from your recent work as if I were a non-technical manager.
A strong answer: Uses plain language and a relevant analogy, and checks the listener has understood.
- 06
What is something technical you learned recently, and how did you learn it?
A strong answer: Gives a genuine example and a sensible learning method, such as building something small or reading source code.
Probe
Red flags to probe with a person
These are prompts for a follow-up conversation, not automatic reasons to reject. Context matters, and a reviewer should hear the candidate out.
- Cannot separate their own contribution from the team's achievements.
- Blames others for every incident or difficult project.
- Dismisses testing, code review or documentation as unnecessary.
- Buzzword-heavy answers with no concrete example behind them.
With Voxxhire
Running the first round with Voxxhire
- 01
Configure the role
Set the role criteria, competencies and job-specific interview prompts in an interview template, and agree the scoring guidance with the hiring manager.
- 02
Invite candidates
Send the interview invitation by email from the hiring pipeline, or attach the template to a job so applicants are invited after they apply.
- 03
Candidate completes a voice interview
After a notice and consent step and a quick microphone check, the candidate answers your questions in a spoken interview in English or Arabic, at a time that suits them.
- 04
Recruiter reviews the evidence
Your reviewer reads the transcript and an evidence-backed scorecard that quotes the answer behind each competency score. Any AI recommendation is advisory and marked for human review.
- 05
A person decides
Your recruiter or hiring manager decides who moves forward to the next stage. Voxxhire does not hire or reject anyone automatically.
Setting it up for software engineers
The Voxxhire first round is a structured conversation, not a coding test. Use it to decide who should receive your technical exercise or pair-programming session. Configure prompts around your stack and seniority level, and ask an engineering lead to define what a strong answer to the incident and trade-off questions sounds like. Reviewers with engineering experience should read the transcript, since judging technical reasoning needs domain knowledge.
Boundaries
What Voxxhire does not do
Voxxhire runs and documents the structured interview stage. It does not verify visas, licences, certificates or right-to-work status, and it never hires or rejects a candidate automatically. For software engineers, your team still owns:
- A coding exercise, system-design interview or pair-programming session.
- References from engineering managers or peers.
- Visa, residency, right-to-work and relocation requirements.
- Any security vetting required for your sector.
FAQ
Frequently asked
Does Voxxhire run coding tests?
No. Voxxhire runs a structured voice interview and produces an advisory scorecard. Use your own technical exercise for coding skill.
Why screen engineers by conversation at all?
It helps protect senior engineers' time by checking communication, ownership and reasoning before a technical test, which can shorten the list of exercises to review.
Can this connect to our ATS?
ATS integrations are available on request. Tell us which system you use and your timeline, and we will confirm what is possible.
