How to screen accountants
Since the UAE introduced corporate tax alongside VAT, many SMEs, family businesses and audit firms have needed accountants who can do more than keep the books. They need people who close the month on time, keep records that stand up to the Federal Tax Authority and auditors, and raise problems early. A structured first round lets your finance lead test reasoning before spending time on a technical exercise.
The bar
What good looks like
A strong accountant is accurate and organised. They reconcile bank and supplier accounts promptly, investigate differences instead of forcing them to balance, and document what they did. They understand how VAT and corporate tax obligations affect their daily entries and deadlines.
They also communicate well with non-finance colleagues. Good accountants explain why an expense claim needs a receipt or why a payment is on hold, and they escalate concerns, such as missing documents or unusual transactions, to management without delay.

Ask
Structured interview questions
- 01
Your bank reconciliation is out by a small amount on the day the month-end close is due. What do you do?
A strong answer: Investigates systematically (timing differences, duplicates, bank charges), documents findings and tells the manager if it cannot be resolved in time.
- 02
Walk me through how you prepare for a month-end close.
A strong answer: Describes a checklist covering accruals, prepayments, reconciliations, intercompany items and review, with realistic timings.
- 03
A sales manager submits an expense claim without receipts and says it is urgent. How do you respond?
A strong answer: Explains the policy and the tax reason for documentation, suggests how to obtain evidence and escalates if pressured.
- 04
How does VAT affect the way you record a supplier invoice?
A strong answer: Explains checking the tax invoice details, recording input VAT correctly and keeping records for the required period.
- 05
Tell me about a time you found an error in your own work after it had been reported. What happened?
A strong answer: Is open about the error, explains how they corrected and communicated it, and what control they added.
- 06
A director asks you to record a transaction in a way you think is misleading. What do you do?
A strong answer: Raises the concern, explains the correct treatment and escalates appropriately rather than complying quietly.
- 07
Which accounting systems have you used, and how quickly do you learn a new one?
A strong answer: Names systems honestly, gives an example of learning one and describes how they checked their work while learning.
Probe
Red flags to probe with a person
These are prompts for a follow-up conversation, not automatic reasons to reject. Context matters, and a reviewer should hear the candidate out.
- Describes plugging differences to make reconciliations balance.
- Vague about VAT basics despite claiming UAE experience.
- Would follow instructions to misstate figures without objection.
- Unable to describe their own role in a close rather than the team's.

- 01
Configure the role
Set the role criteria, competencies and job-specific interview prompts in an interview template, and agree the scoring guidance with the hiring manager.
- 02
Invite candidates
Send the interview invitation by email from the hiring pipeline, or attach the template to a job so applicants are invited after they apply.
- 03
Candidate completes a voice interview
After a notice and consent step and a quick microphone check, the candidate answers your questions in a spoken interview in English or Arabic, at a time that suits them.
- 04
Recruiter reviews the evidence
Your reviewer reads the transcript and an evidence-backed scorecard that quotes the answer behind each competency score. Any AI recommendation is advisory and marked for human review.
- 05
A person decides
Your recruiter or hiring manager decides who moves forward to the next stage. Voxxhire does not hire or reject anyone automatically.
Setting it up for accountants
Write separate templates for accounts payable, general ledger, management accounts and audit roles, and ask your finance manager to approve the scenarios. Keep heavy technical testing for a later exercise; the first round should test reasoning, controls and communication. If the accountant will deal with Arabic-language documents or authorities, consider including an Arabic interview option. Reviewers should mark claims about qualifications or experience that need verification.
Boundaries
What Voxxhire does not do
Voxxhire runs and documents the structured interview stage. It does not verify visas, licences, certificates or right-to-work status, and it never hires or rejects a candidate automatically. For accountants, your team still owns:
- Verification of qualifications and professional-body membership, such as ACCA, CPA or CMA.
- A technical test or case exercise.
- References from previous finance managers.
- Visa, residency and right-to-work status.
FAQ
Frequently asked
Can a voice interview test accounting knowledge?
It can test reasoning and judgement, such as how a candidate approaches a reconciliation or a tax question. Use a separate technical exercise for detailed skills.
Does Voxxhire verify professional qualifications?
No. Qualification and membership checks are completed by your team with the relevant body. Voxxhire supports the structured interview stage.
Is this useful for small finance teams?
Yes. A finance manager in an SME often has little time to interview. A consistent first round helps them focus on the strongest candidates.
