About the role LeanX (Part of Lean) is quickly expanding beyond remittance into a new generation of financial products, from embedded wallets to corporate, and this role sits at the heart of that expansion. The ideal candidate brings experience in crypto or blockchain products, such as a good understanding of wallets, exchanges, custody, on-chain movements, and the ecosystem in general. As a Senior Engineer, you will design and build the backend systems and integrations that power these products, working in a small, high-ownership team that moves fast and ships real things. Your work will directly determine how quickly LeanX (Part of Lean) can unlock a $50B+ addressable market across the region. About LeanX (Part of Lean) LeanX is Lean Technologies’ cross-border payments platform. It helps banks, exchange houses, money transfer operators and payroll platforms send money internationally, with 24/7 settlement and local-currency payouts. Traditional cross-border payments run through correspondent banks, so they’re slowed down by cut-off times, weekend queues and cash sitting idle in nostro accounts. LeanX gets rid of that. Clients use one API and one counterparty instead of separate banking setups in every market. LeanX sits within Lean, the leading financial infrastructure provider in the Middle East, trusted by 350+ clients including Binance, Careem, and Etisalat, and backed by General Catalyst, Sequoia, Bain, and more. Lean has processed billions of dollars in transactions and raised over $100M to date. LeanX is one of its most profitable and fastest-moving bets - a small team with a very large mandate. What you’ll own Design, build, and maintain scalable, high-availability backend services in Java (Quarkus) and Python Build and maintain integrations with external systems - payment providers, exchanges, banks, blockchain networks, ClickHouse, and identity services Own the reliability, security, and consistency of transactions and financial data across systems Drive performance improvements, architecture decisions, and reduction of technical debt over time Review code, set engineering standards, and mentor other engineers on the team Translate product requirements into technical solutions in close collaboration with the Product team Proactively communicate progress, risks, and blockers to the team and stakeholders What we’re looking for 5+ years building and running backend systems in production Strong Java (17+) with a modern framework - we use Quarkus; solid hands-on Python Experience designing REST APIs and working in a microservices architecture. Solid knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL) and caching (Redis) Experience with messaging or event streaming systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ) Strong testing habits (unit and integration) and a track record of rigorous code review Security-aware engineering: authentication, secrets handling, and secure coding practices Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency, or high-availability systems Familiarity with ClickHouse or other analytical databases Crypto or blockchain product experience: wallets, exchanges, custody, on-chain data, or interacting with nodes (Web3j, web3.py ) Understanding of cryptography fundamentals: key management, signing, HSMs Fintech, payments, or regulated environment background (KYC/AML, compliance) Calm and delivery-focused under pressure - you drive tasks to completion, raise blockers early, and don’t wait to be chased Pragmatic: you balance quality with speed and know when “good enough” ships Proactive communicator: you report reliably on status and risks in writing and stand-ups Takes ownership of outcomes, including mistakes, and follows through Curious and a fast learner. You pick up new tools, technologies, and domains quickly Clear communication in English NB. About the Job Lean is hiring a Principal Product Manager to own product for LeanX, our cross-border payments and stablecoin infrastructure business. This is a startup inside a scale-up. LeanX is early, and you would be shaping it from close to day one: setting product direction, deciding what we build and in what order, and working directly with engineering to get it built. You would not be starting from zero. You would have Lean's infrastructure, licences, clients and leadership behind you. Volume is growing quickly and our first large clients are going live. Today, much of what makes the business work is pushed through by hand by the leadership team. Your job is to turn that into a product the team can build, scale and defend. The hard problems here sit between regulation, engineering, product and commercial, so you need to be comfortable thinking across all four at once. You will work as a member of the LeanX leadership team, and partner closely with our engineering team in Sarajevo and our commercial team in Dubai. Regular travel to both is expected. About Lean Lean is the leading financial infrastructure provider in the Middle East. We power some of the region's largest companies with APIs that enable payments, account verification, financial data access, and other critical financial infrastructure. What started as the region's pioneering Open Banking platform and quickly became the de facto leader in account aggregation and payment initiation in the region is now becoming something bigger: a multi-product infrastructure company powering payments, data, and lending across MENA. We've processed billions of dollars in transactions. We're trusted by 450+ clients - from Tabby and Tas'heel to Hungerstation - and backed by General Catalyst, Sequoia, and Shorooq. Our $67.5M Series B was just the beginning. We're expanding into new markets, opening offices, acquiring businesses, and building capabilities that didn't exist here before. About LeanX: LeanX is Lean's cross-border and stablecoin business. Our clients are remittance companies, exchange houses and businesses moving money across borders, mostly for person-to-person remittance and business payouts. LeanX operates under Lean's regulated entities and is built by a dedicated engineering team in Sarajevo. Responsibilities Product strategy and leadership Own product strategy for LeanX across all its product lines: what we build, why, and in what order. Turn strategy into clear specs, priorities and roadmaps the engineering team can execute against. Make the call when priorities change, with a clear view of the team's capacity and the trade-offs involved. Help shape LeanX's long-term strategy and communicate it across the company. Cross-border payments platform Build a cross-border platform that can compete with the leading global payout networks. Make it scale: more volume, more clients and more corridors without rebuilding each time. Launching a new corridor should be a repeatable process, not a project. Automate treasury operations (pre-funding, liquidity, FX and reconciliation) so they no longer depend on people moving money by hand. Define the technical infrastructure a cross-border platform needs, and guide engineering to build it. Make it easy for clients to integrate and go live: APIs, documentation, sandbox and onboarding. Treat regulation, licensing and partner coverage as part of the product, so the platform is defensible. Stablecoin-native infrastructure Own the roadmap for stablecoin infrastructure: wallets as a service, on-ramps and off-ramps, stablecoin acceptance and stablecoin payouts. Help decide which adjacent opportunities to pursue and when, and say no to the ones that would distract us. Connecting Lean and LeanX Make sure LeanX builds on Lean's core infrastructure where it should, rather than rebuilding what already exists. Keep one clean platform across stablecoin and fiat, across licences and across product lines as it grows. Bring ways of working closer together across the two teams. Working with commercial and engineering Be the first stop for product questions from clients, the commercial team and the wider company, so engineers can focus on building. Work with commercial on the pipeline: what each client needs to go live and what that means for volume. Set up automation for routine coordination. This is not a ticket-and-follow-up job. What we're looking for 8+ years in product management, including senior ownership of B2B or infrastructure products. Experience in cross-border payments, remittance, payouts, treasury, or stablecoin and digital asset infrastructure. Strong technical fluency: comfortable with APIs, system design conversations and the trade-offs engineers face. A track record of taking products from early stage to scale, ideally in a startup or new business line. Comfort working in regulated environments and treating compliance and licensing as product inputs. Clear, concise written communication. You write the specs and strategy documents yourself. Experience working with distributed engineering teams across time zones. High agency and good judgment under ambiguity. Experience in the GCC, South Asia or other emerging-market payment corridors is a plus. Experience building with AI tools to automate product and team workflows is a plus. Arabic is a plus. NB. While we think the above experience could be important, we’re keen to hear from people that believe they have valuable experience to bring to the role. About Lean Lean is the leading financial infrastructure provider in the Middle East. We power some of the region’s largest companies with APIs that enable payments, account verification, financial data access, and other critical financial infrastructure. What started as the region’s pioneering Open Banking platform and quickly became the de facto leader in account aggregation and payment initiation in the region is now becoming something bigger: a multi-product infrastructure company powering payments, data, and lending across MENA. We’ve processed billions of dollars in transactions. We’re trusted by 350+ clients - from Tabby and Tas’heel to Hungerstation - and backed by General Catalyst, Sequoia, and Shorooq. Our $67.5M Series B was just the beginning. We’re expanding into new markets, opening offices, acquiring businesses, and building capabilities that didn’t exist here before. Responsibilities Develop and implement comprehensive compliance policies and procedures aligned to the Law of Payments and Payment Services and its Implementing Regulations, SAMA’s Open Banking Framework and Counter-Fraud Framework, the Financial Consumer Protection Principles and other applicable KSA regulation, and own the KSA policy set through its annual GLRCC review and approval cycle. Monitor and assess regulatory change across SAMA, SDAIA (data protection), and other relevant authorities, and translate it into clear, actionable guidance for the business. Own the KSA Compliance Annual Plan and the compliance risk assessment, and report progress against them quarterly to the GLRCC and the Board. Lead SAMA supervisory visits and inspections, and compliance audits (external, internal and outsourced), ensuring clear communication, a documented evidence trail and resolution of findings and of commitments made to SAMA. Establish and run a risk-based Compliance Monitoring Program (CMP) and periodic testing programme across all KSA operations. Act as SAMA-approved Compliance Officer and AML / Financial Crime Officer (Money Laundering Reporting Officer): oversee the AML/CFT program, including customer due diligence, sanctions and PEP screening, transaction monitoring and STR decisioning, and report suspicious activity to the Saudi Arabia Financial Intelligence Unit (SAFIU), in line with the Anti-Money Laundering Law, its implementing regulations, and SAMA rules. Own compliance with SAMA’s Counter-Fraud Framework: the quarterly compliance status report to SAMA’s Anti-Fraud Supervision team, the remediation plan, fraud detection, investigation and reporting controls, anti-fraud tooling, and chairing the Counter-Fraud Governance Committee. Own SAMA’s approved-persons process for the company: Fit and Proper submissions, non-objection requests and withdrawals for board members, committee members and senior positions, and the register of SAMA notifications and no-objections. Support the Data Protection Officer (Legal) on data protection and privacy compliance under the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) and SDAIA requirements, owning the compliance interface where SAMA obligations touch personal data and working with the cyber team on emerging risks. Provide expert advice to departments across the business on compliance matters, including regulatory review of new products, use cases and client segments before launch. Maintain a deep understanding of the KSA regulatory landscape and brief senior management to inform strategic decisions. Manage relationships with SAMA and relevant industry bodies, and stay ahead of upcoming mandates. Lead licence applications, additions of services and SAMA no-objection requests, including the regulatory business plan and pre-commencement conditions for new payment services, and maintain the regulatory correspondence log. Deliver accurate, timely reporting to regulators and senior management on compliance activity: SAMA’s monthly Open Banking reports, quarterly Counter-Fraud Framework returns, SAFIU filings, material-incident notifications within SAMA’s one-hour requirement, and the quarterly Compliance and Financial Crime report to the GLRCC and the Board. Own the Consumer Protection and Complaint Handling framework, including the complaints channel, handling timelines and SAMA complaints reporting. Oversee the compliance aspects of outsourcing and third-party arrangements, including Fourth Party onboarding and ongoing oversight under the Open Banking Framework, and SAMA outsourcing notifications and no-objections. Deliver the compliance and financial crime training programme for staff and the Board, including the Board Annual Training Plan. Manage and develop the KSA Compliance Officer, and build the team as the licence scope expands. What we’re looking for 6+ years of compliance experience in financial services, including direct experience inside a SAMA-regulated entity. In-depth knowledge of KSA financial services regulation applicable to fintechs and payment / open banking providers, specifically the Law of Payments and Payment Services and its Implementing Regulations, SAMA rules, the KSA Open Banking Framework, SAMA’s Counter-Fraud Framework and Financial Consumer Protection Principles, AML/CFT law, and PDPL. Demonstrated track record building and running compliance programs and policies from the ground up. Direct experience managing SAMA inspections and audits, and liaising with regulators. Meets SAMA’s Fit and Proper requirements. Appointment is conditional on SAMA’s written non-objection. A current or prior SAMA non-objection for either position is a strong advantage. Relevant compliance certification (for example CAMS) or an equivalent AML / financial crime qualification. Experience preparing licence applications or regulatory business plans, and working with counter-fraud frameworks and anti-fraud tooling, is highly desirable.
