The opportunity
About this role
Please note: Applicants should be UK based and already have the right to work here.
To build and maintain Masdar’s in-house energy-market and grid-aware modelling capability for European renewable energy and flexibility investments. The role will connect power-market fundamentals with commercially relevant grid considerations, translating generation, demand, interconnection, network constraints, curtailment, losses, congestion and connection timing into robust assumptions for project valuation, auctions, route-to-market, M&A and portfolio strategy across offshore wind, onshore wind, solar PV, BESS and hybrid assets.
Responsibilities
Energy market and system modelling
Develop, enhance and maintain transparent long-term power-market and energy-system models for selected European markets, covering demand, generation build-out and retirement, fuel and carbon assumptions, interconnection, storage, flexibility and policy scenarios
Prepare the in-house internally owned views of wholesale prices, capture prices, cannibalisation, imbalance exposure, curtailment, ancillary-service value, capacity-market revenues and asset revenue stacks
Build scenario, sensitivity and stress-testing frameworks that quantify uncertainty and clearly link model drivers to commercial outcomes
Maintain model governance, version control, documentation, input lineage, calibration checks and reproducible outputs suitable for investment decision-making
Commercially relevant grid analytics
Integrate connection dates, export limits, transmission constraints, locational signals, losses, charging, outage dependencies and curtailment risk into commercial models
Develop high-level spatial and nodal indicators to compare locations, competing generation and demand, congestion, reinforcement dependencies, achieved prices and export capability
Test grid delay, phased export, constrained operation, connection reform and network-development scenarios and quantify impacts on project value, financing metrics and bid strategy for renewable assets
Translate technical studies and connection documentation into auditable commercial assumptions
Auctions, bids and competitive positioning
Analyse and interpret wholesale electricity market dynamics, including price formation, system flexibility requirements, congestion patterns, ancillary service markets and evolving market design.
Develop insights into long-term market value creation through optimisation of asset revenues, capture-price performance, storage integration, hybridisation and route-to-market strategies.
Provide commercial leadership on market risk, revenue uncertainty and valuation assumptions across renewable generation, storage, flexibility and emerging energy technologies.
Bridge fundamental market modelling and commercial decision-making by translating complex analytical outputs into actionable investment, trading and strategic recommendations.
BESS, flexibility and hybridisation
Contribute to Masdar’s European storage and flexibility strategy by assessing BESS market attractiveness, revenue depth, duration value, location value, grid constraints and route-to-market maturity.
Model BESS and hybrid asset economics across wholesale arbitrage, balancing, ancillary services, capacity mechanisms, tolling and contracted structures.
Assess location and connection value, renewable-plus-storage operating concepts, export-capacity sharing, clipping, grid charging and curtailment mitigation.
Analyse portfolio synergies between renewables and BESS, including hybridisation, co-location, hedging of capture-price risk, congestion management, balancing value and potential 24/7 clean-power propositions.
Monitor emerging flexibility products and markets, including long-duration storage, demand response, reserve products, grid services and data-centre driven load growth.
Data, tools and capability building
Develop and maintain analytical models, market simulation frameworks, structured datasets, and automated workflows to support power market forecasting, energy systems analysis, optimisation, asset valuation, and commercial strategy, leveraging Python, SQL, Excel, and leading data science and visualisation technologies
Establish model validation, peer review, back-testing and quality assurance; document formulations, solver settings, input provenance, limitations and the distinction between observed data, external forecasts, internal assumptions and judgement.
Third party contractors and advisors
Draft scopes of work for specialist advisors, manage inputs and deliverables, and constructively challenge methodologies and conclusions
Contribution to stakeholder relations
Build and maintain a network of relevant contacts to support daily activities and long-term objectives of the team.
Engage with and monitor relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to ensure adequate knowledge transfer and completion of services as per agreed parameters.
