Logistics and warehousing
How to screen delivery drivers
Last-mile delivery in the UAE and wider GCC runs on drivers and motorbike riders who work long shifts in heat and heavy traffic, often for logistics firms, e-commerce operators, restaurant groups and manpower suppliers. Licences and vehicle checks are essential, but they do not show how a driver behaves when a customer is unreachable, a parcel is damaged or a supervisor pushes for one more drop.
The bar
What good looks like
A good delivery driver is safe and reliable before they are fast. They plan routes sensibly, take breaks, follow speed limits and refuse to use the phone while driving. They look after the vehicle and report faults instead of ignoring them.
They also represent your brand at the door. Strong candidates describe being polite, following proof-of-delivery steps accurately, handling cash on delivery carefully and calling the dispatcher when something is wrong rather than improvising.
Assess
Competencies to assess
Road safety
Prioritises safe driving, rest and heat precautions over speed.
Route planning
Organises drops efficiently and adapts to traffic or road closures.
Proof of delivery and cash handling
Follows scanning, signature and cash procedures accurately.
Customer courtesy
Handles customers politely, including when deliveries go wrong.
Reporting and communication
Keeps dispatch informed about delays, damage and vehicle issues.
Ask
Structured interview questions
- 01
You arrive at a delivery address and the customer is not answering their phone. What do you do?
A strong answer: Follows the company procedure: tries again, contacts dispatch, records the attempt and does not leave the parcel somewhere unsafe.
- 02
Your supervisor says you must finish ten more drops before the end of your shift, but you are already tired. How do you respond?
A strong answer: Explains the safety concern honestly, takes a short break if needed and agrees a realistic plan with the supervisor.
- 03
You notice a warning light on your vehicle at the start of your shift. What do you do?
A strong answer: Reports it before driving, follows the vehicle-check process and does not start the route until it is assessed.
- 04
A customer says the parcel is damaged and refuses to accept it. What happens next?
A strong answer: Stays polite, records the damage with photos if the process allows, informs dispatch and follows the return procedure.
- 05
How do you plan your route when you have many drops across different areas?
A strong answer: Groups drops by area, considers traffic and time windows, uses the navigation app and adjusts when there are delays.
- 06
How do you look after yourself when delivering in very hot weather?
A strong answer: Mentions hydration, breaks in shade, recognising heat exhaustion symptoms and following company heat-safety guidance.
Probe
Red flags to probe with a person
These are prompts for a follow-up conversation, not automatic reasons to reject. Context matters, and a reviewer should hear the candidate out.
- Talks about using the phone while driving as normal.
- Prioritises speed over safety in most answers.
- Describes leaving parcels without following the proof-of-delivery steps.
- Unclear or evasive about licence status or past traffic incidents.

Configure the role
Set the role criteria, competencies and job-specific interview prompts in an interview template, and agree the scoring guidance with the hiring manager.
- 02
Invite candidates
Send the interview invitation by email from the hiring pipeline, or attach the template to a job so applicants are invited after they apply.
- 03
Candidate completes a voice interview
After a notice and consent step and a quick microphone check, the candidate answers your questions in a spoken interview in English or Arabic, at a time that suits them.
- 04
Recruiter reviews the evidence
Your reviewer reads the transcript and an evidence-backed scorecard that quotes the answer behind each competency score. Any AI recommendation is advisory and marked for human review.
- 05
A person decides
Your recruiter or hiring manager decides who moves forward to the next stage. Voxxhire does not hire or reject anyone automatically.
Setting it up for delivery drivers
Keep the interview short, practical and easy to complete from a phone; drivers often apply between shifts. Build separate templates for car, van and motorbike roles if the procedures differ. Choose English or Arabic for each candidate, and remember that some drivers may be more comfortable in another language that Voxxhire does not offer; provide a human alternative for them. A fleet supervisor should review scorecards alongside HR, because they know the real procedures.
Boundaries
What Voxxhire does not do
Voxxhire runs and documents the structured interview stage. It does not verify visas, licences, certificates or right-to-work status, and it never hires or rejects a candidate automatically. For delivery drivers, your team still owns:
- A valid UAE driving licence for the right vehicle category, and any rider permits your emirate requires.
- Traffic-record and background checks, where lawful and required.
- Visa, residency and right-to-work status.
- A practical driving assessment.
FAQ
Frequently asked
Does Voxxhire check driving licences?
No. Licence, traffic-record and visa checks stay with your HR or fleet team. Voxxhire supports the structured interview and review stage.
What if a driver is not comfortable in English or Arabic?
Voxxhire interviews run in English or Arabic. Offer a human interview for candidates who need a different language, and do not treat language alone as a reason to reject a driver.
Can manpower suppliers use this for client fleets?
Yes. A supplier can run a consistent first round and share the evidence with the client reviewer, while each party keeps its own checks.
